YPR considers that the community development in the midst of globalization facing the serious challenges with the complex social reality. The basic spirit of the institution as a space to study and work with the participatory approach toward the marginal urban communities. The growing complexity of issues ranging from the problems of limited space to live (feasible settlement), the inadequate public spaces, the densely population, low education, the vulnerable maternal and children health, and the threat of unemployment mingle into one in the spaces the urban kampong communities.
Besides the character issue, the urban kampong communities become inclusive spaces and tolerant for a wide range of people. Kampongs become an alternative place to stay cheap and affordable for workers in the informal sector, laborers, carpenters, pedicab drivers, laundry wo/man, driver, low-ranking employees, and other minor workers. Kampong also becomes a sign of strong social ties, hospitality, and as an important characteristic of the urban vibrant life. We cannot imagine how the city lives on without them.
Entering the labyrinth of the issues, YPR develops action-research approach to read and respond the real-life of social, cultural, economic, political, and spatial which form the mosaic of urban space. Based on the spirit of “grass roots”, which becomes YPR’s foothold so far, the future orientation of YPR is emphasized on the empowerment of urban communities through:

1. Activities on participatory kampong-based action research in the scheme of “urban-based kampong development. The YPR activists are working with the kampong residents in conducting the research (data collection and mapping on the physical/geographical of the kampong, the dimension on the kampong humanitarian, and real action based on the real needs of the collective kampongs). For the kampong media, YPR develops information media about the history and dynamicity of the kampong through the publication of the kampong and kampong news online.

2. Program on litearcy development as the demand of todays’ community development. The community development on “literacy and knowledge” is an urgent need to improve their negotiating capacity and involvement in urban development. In short, the orientation of this program aims to build a “knowledge-based society.” The program application of this event is realized in the form of community development libraries and various educational activities and raising the awareness of critical thinking skills.
3. Development of inter-kampong networking. It also includes the solidarity among the kampong residents, routine activities for inter-kampong networking through inter-kampong forum and the effort to increase the bargaining power between the kampong residents and the government, and also along with other sectors are important to get further facilitation.

4. Documentation and dissemination of information. To support its action research, YPR is equipped with center of special documentation on the study of urban areas. This is basically a space used for YPR activists in which they prepare, document, assess and discuss their work field. This was also at the same time “antene” that allows YPR to relate to the global world as a recipient and disseminator of information about urban development.
